NEW YORK, September 26, 2005—Assurant, Inc. ("Assurant") (NYSE: AIZ), a premier provider of specialty insurance and insurance-related products and services, announced that it has named Ronny B. Lancaster, 54, senior vice president, federal government relations.

"His extensive health policy experience in both the public and private sectors will be invaluable in helping to formulate a legislative and regulatory program in support of Assurant and each of its specialty insurance businesses."

In this new role, Mr. Lancaster will work closely with Assurant's management team to assure continued compliance with federal and state laws governing corporate political activities. He will also help develop a grass roots program to support the company's legislative priorities.

Most recently, Mr. Lancaster was senior vice president and chief operating officer at the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, one of the nation's leading academic institutions in the training of primary care physicians. During his 12 ½ year career at the Morehouse School, he also served as vice president for health and social policy and senior vice president for management and policy.

Prior to joining the Morehouse School of Medicine, Mr. Lancaster served the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, initially as executive assistant to Secretary Louis W. Sullivan and later as principal deputy assistant secretary for planning and evaluation. He also held the position of chief of fee-for-service programs at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, where he was responsible for federal employees, their families and federal annuitants.

Mr. Lancaster earned a B.A. in economics from the Catholic University of America, an M.B.A. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. from Georgetown Law.

A resident of Atlanta, Mr. Lancaster is a past president of the Association of Minority Health Professions Schools as well as the Minority Health Professions Foundation. He serves on the boards of the Morehouse Research Institute at Morehouse College and Orasure Technologies, a national leader in the manufacture of oral fluid diagnostic products.

Mr. Lancaster is a member of the Washington, D.C. Bar.
