Why retailers may be missing the appliance protection opportunity

5 min. Read
New consumer research suggests that shoppers evaluate protection plans through the ownership experience they expect, not just the coverage they receive.

Most appliance shoppers walk out of your store without protection. For retailers, that represents a significant opportunity to improve appliance protection plan adoption and increase revenue.

New research from the Assurant Major Appliances and Service Study, based on responses from 1,214 U.S. consumers, suggests retailers may be overlooking one of the biggest drivers of appliance protection plan adoption. The findings point to an opportunity that extends beyond the protection plan itself and into how shoppers think about ownership.

The appliance protection plan opportunity is bigger than you think

Only 36% of consumers added major appliance protection to their most recent appliance purchase. That leaves nearly two-thirds of your shoppers walking away unprotected and leaves real revenue on the table.

At first glance, it would be easy to assume the barrier is product knowledge. But the research tells a different story. Among consumers who declined protection, the overwhelming majority (73%) said it simply didn't feel worth the cost. Very few (3%) said they didn't understand what the plan covered.

That distinction changes where retailers should focus. Rather than leading with coverage details, connect appliance protection plans to the ownership outcomes shoppers value most: avoiding unexpected costs, minimizing disruption, and making ownership easier over time.

How appliance price changes protection plan value

The research reveals a clear pattern: Protection adoption increases as appliance price rises.

Shoppers aren't simply becoming more willing to spend as prices rise. They're evaluating protection through a different lens entirely. As the appliance becomes more of an investment, protection starts to feel like a rational extension of that investment rather than an add-on.

Appliance protection plans should sell ownership outcomes, not coverage

The most effective protection conversations align with what the purchase represents to each customer. And that changes by tier.

  • Basic appliance buyers want to avoid unexpected costs. Their concern is the surprise repair bill. 75% of basic-tier protection purchasers cite repair or replacement cost concerns as a reason for buying. Lead with cost protection and predictable ownership expenses.
  • Midrange buyers want confidence in their decision. They're looking for reassurance that support will be there, especially for appliances they rely on every day. Lead with consistent, long-term ownership support.
  • High-end buyers want hassle reduction. They're focused on convenience, speed, and certainty. Lead with faster resolution, clear communication, and expert service.

One protection conversation doesn't fit every shopper. The appliance itself gives you the clue about the outcome your customer values most.

How protection plan framing and timing influence adoption

Timing shapes perceived value just as much as messaging does.

When protection appears late at checkout or in a rushed replacement situation, shoppers evaluate it as an isolated, transactional cost. By that point, they've already calculated the value they see, and defending the price becomes an uphill effort.

When protection appears early, framed alongside benefits, reliability, and long-term ownership, shoppers understand it as part of what they're buying: fewer disruptions and less stress.

Purchase context tells the same story. Planned purchases, like a kitchen upgrade the shopper has been thinking through for weeks, tend to earn higher protection adoption. Reactive purchases, like replacing a refrigerator that failed overnight, tend to earn less. The difference isn't the shopper. It's the moment. When someone feels rushed, protection reads as one more cost. When someone feels deliberate, protection reads as a smart part of the decision.

So the lesson is straightforward. Present protection as part of the appliance decision, not as a checkout add-on. Surface it during research and product comparison, where shoppers are already weighing reliability and long-term value. Earlier timing reduces price scrutiny and builds value before it's questioned.

Why appliance service expectations rise with purchase value

As appliance value rises, tolerance for inconvenience falls. For higher-end purchases, protection becomes less about repair coverage and more about reducing uncertainty and time costs.

The numbers make the point.

  • 83% of high-end buyers expect same-day or one- to two-day service, compared with 49% of lower-priced appliance buyers.
  • 81% of high-end buyers expect appointment windows of four hours or less, compared with 55% of lower-priced buyers.

Consumers who spend more aren't just buying a better appliance. They expect a better ownership experience, and service becomes a larger driver of the value they assign to protection.

How retailers can improve appliance protection plan adoption

The research points to three practical actions retailers can take to strengthen appliance protection plan adoption.

  • Introduce protection earlier. Bring it into research and product comparison, not just the register. Early framing turns protection from an add-on into part of the appliance decision, and it reduces price pushback before it starts.
  • Segment your message by appliance tier. A basic buyer wants cost protection and fewer surprises. A midrange buyer wants confidence and lasting support. A high-end buyer wants convenience, speed, and certainty. Match the story to the shopper.
  • Connect protection to the ownership experience. Lead with ownership confidence, predictability, and reduced disruption, not feature lists. That's what shoppers are really buying.

Improving appliance protection plan adoption isn't simply about explaining coverage. You need to help shoppers understand how appliance protection plans improve the ownership experience throughout the life of their purchase. Start earlier, tailor the message, and center every conversation on the outcome your customer wants. That shift is within your reach, and the research shows it's where your biggest opportunity lives.
