History Matters.

Assurant traces back its roots to 1892 when it began offering disability insurance. Throughout the years, we’ve adapted our portfolio of offerings to meet customers’ needs.   • Assurant expands its management committee to include key functions of risk management, strategy and business development, communication and marketing, technology and human resources under the leadership of enterprise-level senior executives

  • Assurant completes sale of its supplemental and small group self-funded health insurance business lines, a proprietary small group sales channel and certain assets.

  • Assurant expands support for Junior Achievement Discovery Centers in Atlanta as lead sponsor of JA Finance Park® at the JA Discovery Center in Gwinnett.

  • Assurant announces it is realigning its portfolio to focus on the housing and lifestyle markets, where it holds market-leading positions. As part of its strategic realignment, the company also announces it will wind down its health business and is selling its employee benefits business, as these businesses no longer meet the Company’s specialty return requirements.

  • Alan B. Colberg, formerly President of Assurant, Inc., becomes President and Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Robert B. Pollock.


  • Assurant Solutions launches its Connected Living division, integrating its mobile and extended warranty programs divisions to focus on delivering comprehensive protection for the connected consumer.

  • Assurant Specialty Property forms Mortgage Solutions to provide solutions to and manage property risks across the mortgage value chain. Mortgage Solutions includes three integrated businesses acquired between 2013 and 2014: eMortgage Logic, a provider of broker price opinions (BPOs), property condition reports and local market analytics; StreetLinks, an industry-leading independent appraisal management company; and Assurant Field Asset Services, a leading inspections and property preservation firm.

  • Christopher J. Pagano, formerly Executive Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Investment Officer of Assurant, Inc., becomes Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, succeeding Michael J. Peninger.



  • Assurant Solar Project Insurance, a new comprehensive insurance solution for commercial solar project developments, is introduced.

  • Assurant celebrates 120th anniversary by honoring its enduring values and ringing the NYSE closing bell.


  • Assurant Specialty Property acquires SureDeposit, the leading provider of security deposit alternatives to the multifamily renters industry.

  • Assurant Solutions wins the Stevie® Awards for Sales & Customer Service in the Innovation in Customer Service category.


  • Assurant Employee Benefits celebrates its 100th anniversary.

  • Elaine D. Rosen is named Chair of Assurant's Board of Directors.


  • Assurant celebrates five years as a public company.

  • Mike Peninger, formerly President and Chief Executive Officer of Assurant Employee Benefits, becomes Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Assurant, Inc.

  • Assurant Employee Benefits and Aetna renew dental PPO network access agreement.


  • Assurant Solutions continues international growth by expanding its business operations into Asia.

  • Assurant strengthens leadership position in service contract market by acquiring GE Consumer and Industrial’s Warranty Management Group.

  • Assurant Health and State Farm renew national distribution alliance.

  • Assurant expands client portfolio and servicing capabilities in wireless service contract marketplace by acquiring Signal Holdings, LLC. Signal and Assurant Solutions partner to launch AssureConnectionSM, a service contract-based protection program that can be customized to provide coverage for almost any wireless product and priced by market.


  • Assurant expands distribution in UK through acquisitions of Swansure and Centrepoint Insurance.

  • Assurant extends exclusive distribution agreement with SCI to 2013; Completes acquisition of Mayflower National Life Insurance Company.

  • Assurant, Inc. (AIZ) added to S&P 500 stock index.


  • Kerry Clayton announces retirement; Robert Pollock, former President and Chief Operating Officer, is new President and Chief Executive Officer.

  • Assurant Solutions begins operating as two separate businesses -- Assurant Specialty Property and Assurant Solutions.

  • Assurant strengthens leadership position in creditor-placed homeowners by acquiring Safeco Financial Institution Solutions.

  • Assurant Employee Benefits announces larger combined dental PPO network through network access agreement with Aetna.

  • Assurant completes the sale of its equity interest in Private Health Care Systems, Inc. (PHCS).


  • Assurant realigns its funeral pre-funding and preplanning business segment, Assurant Preneed, under its Assurant Solutions business segment.

  • Robert Pollock becomes President and Chief Operating Officer of Assurant.

  • Fortis takes steps to divest its remaining interest in Assurant through secondary offering of common stock.

  • Acquisition of Recreational Finance, LLC, developer of finance and insurance technology for RV market.


  • As a result of the Medicare Prescription & Modernization Act, Assurant Health becomes one of the first companies to offer the tax-advantaged Health Savings Account – a tax-deductible savings account that is paired with a high deductible insurance plan to cover current and future medical expenses.

  • Assurant’s Board of Directors declares first quarterly cash dividend of $0.07 per common share.

  • Assurant is born when Fortis, Inc. completes its initial public offering process. Assurant begins to trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol AIZ.


  • Dr. John Palms is named Chairman of Assurant's Board of Directors.

  • Fortis announces its intention to sell Fortis, Inc. via an initial public offering. Fortis, Inc. begins process of becoming Assurant -- a publicly traded company.


  • Assurant Solutions continues international growth by expanding its business operations into Latin America.


  • Acquisition of Protective Life’s indemnity dental business and prepaid dental subsidiaries, positioning Assurant Employee Benefits as the leader in the voluntary (employee-paid) dental benefits market.

  • Fortis Financial Group, the company’s variable life insurance and annuity businesses and its proprietary mutual fund complex, is sold when variable products outgrow their specialty insurance status

  • Acquisition of CORE, INC., a leading provider of employee absence management and disability reinsurance management services.



  • American Bankers Insurance Group in Miami, Florida, one of the two leading U.S. credit-related insurers, is acquired. American Bankers is combined with American Security Group to form Assurant Group (now Assurant Solutions).

  • Fortis Health develops an exclusive arrangement with State Farm to sell insurance through their agents.

  • Assurant Group (a predecessor to Assurant Solutions and Assurant Specialty Property) creates SmartFlow technology to identify documents submitted for hazard insurance processing, data extraction and verification against a central database.


  • Acquisition of Insureco Inc., a mortgage market managing general agency and service provider, strengthening American Security Group (now Assurant Solutions).

  • Pierce National Life Insurance, a U.S. funeral insurance company, is acquired strengthening Assurant Preneed.

  • John Alden Financial Corporation, an independent provider of group health insurance and health-care services, is acquired, making Assurant Health the leading independent carrier in the small group health-care market.


  • Time Insurance Company changes its name to Fortis Health


  • Fortis starts using the internet to market insurance.


  • Assurant Solutions continues international growth by expanding its business operations in Europe.


  • Time Insurance Company (now Assurant Health) celebrates its 100th birthday.



  • AMEV/VSB of the Netherlands and AG, Belgium’s biggest insurer, join forces in the first cross-border European merger in the financial sector, creating Fortis.


  • Acquisition of Western Life, creating Fortis Financial Group. Fortis is a Latin word meaning "strong, steadfast and determined."



  • N.V. AMEV of the Netherlands makes its first acquisition in the U.S., Time Insurance Company (now Assurant Health), via the U.S. holding company AMEV Holdings, Inc.


  • First major medical policies introduced by Time Insurance Company.


  • American Bankers Life Assurance Company of Florida, a sister company to American Bankers Insurance and another predecessor of Assurant Solutions and Assurant Specialty Property is launched.


  • American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida, another predecessor to Assurant Solutions and Assurant Specialty Property, is launched.


  • Time Insurance Company starts selling group health insurance. They’re one of the first entrants to market and a leader in the market.


  • American Security Insurance Company, a predecessor to Assurant Solutions and Assurant Specialty Property, is formed.


  • Montana Life Insurance Company, a predecessor to Assurant Employee Benefits, is incorporated in Montana. (The company later changes its name to Western Life Insurance Company.)


  • LaCrosse Mutual Aid Association, the forerunner of Assurant Health, is established to sell disability insurance. (The company later changes its name Time Insurance Company.)
